Seceda stands as the most popular photography hike in all of the Dolomites — attracting photographers and hikers to its iconic ridgeline above Ortisei in Val Gardena. The summit reaches approximately 2,518 meters (8,261 feet) above sea level within the Puez-Odle Nature Park, a UNESCO World Heritage territory in South Tyrol.

Here’s everything you need to know before you go, including the things the Instagram posts don’t tell you.

Cable Car and Costs

Most visitors take the Seceda cable car from Ortisei:

Parking at the cable car station is advertised at €13 maximum, but we were charged €22. The budget alternative: park at the Alpe di Siusi garage for €8/day, approximately 10 minutes’ walk to the cable car. This is the move.

Where to Actually Shoot

Most photo locations sit on private farmland — there’s an unexpected €5 toll booth per person near the ridgeline. We discovered the best shots on the cross trail to the left of the cable car station. This avoids the toll and puts you in position for less-crowded compositions.

Use a 70–120mm zoom lens paired with an ND filter for midday conditions. The compressed perspective from a longer focal length makes the jagged Odle peaks more dramatic in frame. Wide angles are less effective here than they look in your head — the peaks don’t feel as imposing.

Drones: No drone flying permitted due to protected nature park status. This is enforced, not just advisory.

If You Want to Hike

The Ortisei to Seceda Ridge full hiking route:

An alternative starting from Santa Cristina via trail 4 to Col Raiser takes approximately 3 hours at medium difficulty. Both give you the summit without cable car fees.

Dining at Seceda

Three refugios operate at or near the summit: Rifugio Firenze, Baita Troier, and Pieralongia. Regional specialties include pasta, dumplings (Canederli), goulash, and schnitzel with panoramic views. Restaurants near the cable car station below have slightly better pricing if you’re on a budget.
